Chapter 7 - The Burning Sky

I collapsed onto the icy tarmac as the burning wreckage crashed into the distant trees.
I screamed until my throat bled, believing my entire family had just been incinerated.
Marcus grabbed my shoulders and tried to pull me away from the intense heat of the scattered fires.
I fought him off, determined to run into the flames to find my children.
Then, a cheap burner phone began vibrating intensely inside my heavy coat pocket.
I had confiscated the device from Vanessa's apartment during the chaotic raid.
I pulled it out and answered the call with severely trembling, bloody hands.
A familiar, terrified voice spoke through the heavy static on the line.
It was Claire.
She was crying uncontrollably, struggling to catch her breath.
