Chapter 5 - The Rescue

My ears rang violently as the mercenaries dragged me across the hardwood floor.
I was too weak to fight back against the massive men.
Suddenly, the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse shattered into a million pieces.
Marcus and a team of elite security contractors breached the apartment from the roof using rappelling ropes.
A deafening firefight erupted in the luxurious living room.
The air quickly filled with thick smoke and the smell of gunpowder.
Marcus expertly shot the mercenary who was dragging me toward the bathroom.
I grabbed the dead man's fallen gun and fired a single shot directly into Vanessa's shoulder.
She screamed in agony and collapsed behind her velvet sofa.
Marcus grabbed my jacket and pulled me out of the apartment before the local police could arrive.
We rushed down the fire escape and jumped into his waiting getaway car.
Marcus handed me a glowing tactical tablet as he sped away from the sirens.
He said he had just intercepted a brief location ping from Claire's emergency burner phone.
My wife and children were currently sitting at a private, unregistered airstrip deep in the mountains.

Marcus warned me that a massive, deadly winter storm was moving into that exact area.
If Claire's pilot tried to take off in this weather, the plane would absolutely crash.
