Chapter 2 - The Brother

I left my empty house and drove my armored SUV directly to Julian's penthouse.
The Boston snowstorm was blinding, but my rage kept me completely focused.
I bypassed his doorman and rode the private elevator up to the top floor.
Julian answered the door wearing a dark bathrobe and a guilty expression.
I did not wait for an invitation before violently slamming him against the wall.
I demanded to know why he had betrayed me and helped my wife escape.
Julian struggled to breathe as he pushed my hands away from his throat.
He said he had to help her because she found something terrifying in my home office.
I stepped back, completely confused by his accusation.
I asked him what she could have possibly found.
Julian swore he did not know the details, but he said Claire was crying hysterically.
He admitted that he gave her a car and wiped the security cameras to protect her.
But Julian was not completely stupid.
He told me he had secretly placed a magnetic GPS tracker on the underside of the rental car.
He handed me a glowing tablet displaying a blinking red dot.
I snatched the tablet and raced back out into the freezing storm.
The tracker led me to a cheap, rundown motel on the dangerous edge of the city.
I pulled into the parking lot and found the rental car sitting beneath a broken streetlight.
The doors of the vehicle were wide open, allowing the heavy snow to blow inside.
I drew my weapon and approached the car with my heart pounding in my ears.
I looked into the backseat and completely stopped breathing.

Lily's favorite pink blanket was lying on the floorboards.
The soft fabric was completely soaked in a massive pool of fresh, bright red blood.
