Chapter 4 - The Assassin

A murderous fury replaced the cold terror inside my chest.
I left the motel and drove my armored vehicle straight to Vanessa's luxury apartment building.
I did not bother stopping at the front desk.
I took the stairs and kicked her heavy wooden door completely off its steel hinges.
Vanessa was sitting calmly on her velvet sofa, sipping a glass of expensive bourbon.
She was not wearing lingerie or crying over my unexpected arrival.
She was surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear.
Vanessa dropped her sweet, innocent facade immediately.
She laughed out loud and told me I was incredibly stupid for taking the bait.
She revealed that she was the daughter of a rival logistics boss my father had destroyed twenty years ago.
She confessed that she had been slipping a slow, untraceable neurotoxin into Claire's coffee for weeks.
Vanessa wanted Claire to seem insane so nobody would believe her when the premature babies slowly died.
I raised my gun to shoot her right between the eyes.
Before I could pull the trigger, a mercenary struck the back of my head with a heavy rifle.

I collapsed onto the expensive white rug, my vision completely blurring.
As I bled onto her floor, Vanessa coldly ordered her men to burn my body in the bathtub.
