Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece of Deception

A hail of bullets tore through the diner, completely destroying the tables and shattering the coffee mugs.

Marcus grabbed my arm and dragged me violently to the floor, shielding my body with his own.

We crawled through the broken glass and spilled hot coffee, desperately making our way toward the kitchen doors.

The terrified diner staff had already fled through the back alley exit.

Marcus kicked the kitchen door open, pulled his heavy pistol, and fired two blind shots toward the street.

We sprinted out the back door and threw ourselves into his armored SUV just as a black van screeched to a halt behind us.

Marcus slammed his foot on the gas pedal, tearing through the narrow alleyway and leaving our attackers in the dust.

My ears were ringing endlessly, and my entire body was shaking with uncontrollable adrenaline.

"They are absolutely desperate to silence you before you go to the federal authorities," Marcus yelled over the roaring engine.

"We need to lure them into a controlled environment where we hold all the cards."

I nodded slowly, my fear rapidly transforming into a cold, calculated rage.

I was not going to let this monster steal my life and walk away a rich man.

I told Marcus to drive us to the empty Boston townhouse that Julian had secretly sold.

Julian believed he completely owned that space, making it the perfect location for an ambush.

Marcus parked two blocks away, and we walked through the shadows of the quiet suburban neighborhood.

We picked the back door lock and slipped into the dark, completely empty house.

Marcus spent the next two hours rigging the living room with hidden cameras and highly sensitive microphones.

He linked the entire surveillance network directly to the local police field office server.

We needed Julian to explicitly confess to the previous murders on tape to guarantee a federal conviction.

I used Marcus’s burner phone to send a text message directly to Clara’s cell phone.

"I am at the Boston house, and I am willing to trade the audio recording for my life," I typed, hitting send.

It was a complete bluff, but I knew their greed and paranoia would absolutely force them to show up.

We waited in the pitch-black darkness of the empty hallway, the silence feeling incredibly heavy.

Thirty minutes later, the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the front door lock echoed through the house.

The heavy oak door slowly swung open, revealing the tall, dark silhouette of Julian.

He stepped inside, holding a suppressed pistol in his right hand, his eyes scanning the empty room.

I took a deep breath, stepped out of the shadows, and stood entirely unarmed in the center of the living room.

Julian smiled cruelly and raised the gun, aiming it directly at my forehead.

"You always were too brave for your own good, Jessi," he mocked softly.

Then, the lights suddenly flipped on, revealing Clara standing directly behind him with a gun pointed squarely at his back.
