Chapter 4 - The False Patient

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone in the dark living room.
Clara was not a dying cancer patient living out her final days in a hospital bed.
She was a licensed physician actively supplying the poison to murder me.
I needed to expose her true identity and gather hard evidence before they tried to kill me again.
The next morning, Julian left the condo to finalize the sale of my townhouse.
I slipped out the balcony door again and drove my rental car straight to the medical center.
I pulled a medical mask over my face and put on a pair of dark sunglasses to hide my identity.
I navigated the busy hospital corridors until I reached the fourth floor.
I found the private corner room where Julian had introduced me to Clara just a few days ago.
The door was slightly cracked open, and I peeked through the narrow gap.
Clara was not wearing a hospital gown, and she was certainly not connected to any intravenous machines.
She was wearing a tailored suit, typing vigorously on a sleek silver laptop at the desk.
Her pale, frail appearance had completely vanished, replaced by a sharp, healthy complexion.
I pulled my phone out and pressed record, filming her as she reviewed my life insurance policy on the screen.
She picked up her cell phone and dialed a number, putting it on speakerphone.
Julian’s voice echoed through the quiet hospital room.
"Did she take the capsule last night?" Clara asked, her voice entirely devoid of the weakness she had faked.
"Yes, she swallowed it right in front of me," Julian replied with a cruel laugh.
"She should stop breathing entirely within the next twelve hours."
Clara smiled, a sinister expression that made my stomach churn with disgust.
"Good work, darling," she praised him.
"Once the insurance money clears, we can finally move to the offshore estate."
I had recorded enough audio to send them both to federal prison for the rest of their lives.
I stopped the recording and carefully backed away from the door.
I turned around to sneak back toward the elevators, desperate to leave the building.
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around violently.
I gasped, looking up into the furious, cold eyes of Julian.
He had not gone to finalize the house sale at all.
"You always were a terrible actress, Jessi," he snarled, tightening his grip on my arm.
He ripped the medical mask off my face and snatched my cell phone from my hands.

Before I could even scream for help, he slammed me forcefully against the hospital wall.
"Did you really think I wouldn't notice a tracking device on my own wife's rental car?" he whispered into my ear.
