Chapter 7 - The Framed Sheriff

I froze in my tracks, my tactical pistol lowered as I stared at my daughter.
Emma did not run toward me or even call out my name.
Her eyes continued to project a bizarre, synthetic blue light into the darkness.
I took a slow, cautious step forward, calling her name softly into the quiet night.
As I got closer, the horrifying truth completely shattered my fragile hope.
It was not Emma standing in the driveway of the compound.
It was an incredibly advanced, highly realistic holographic projection displaying a looped video of her.
A hidden loudspeaker crackled to life from a camera mounted on the concrete wall.
Diana Harrington's smug voice echoed loudly through the humid Texas air.
She laughed and congratulated me on falling into her carefully constructed trap.
She explained that she needed my fingerprints on the weapons I had taken from her guards.
Those exact weapons had just been linked to a brutal massacre at the local police precinct.
Diana had ordered her men to slaughter my corrupt captain and several innocent officers.
She had successfully framed me for the mass murder of my own law enforcement colleagues.
Every police officer in the state of Texas was now actively hunting me with orders to shoot on sight.
The holographic image of Emma suddenly flickered and vanished into thin air.
Red and blue police lights began cresting the hills in the distance, illuminating the dark sky.
A dozen police cruisers were speeding down the gravel road directly toward my position.
I turned and sprinted back toward the stolen security van I had left idling.
I jumped into the driver's seat and slammed my heavy boot onto the gas pedal.
I tore wildly through the brush, completely avoiding the main road to escape the incoming convoy.
I drove blindly into the dense, thorny woods, smashing through small trees and heavy underbrush.
The van eventually became hopelessly stuck in a deep, muddy ravine.
I grabbed my weapons and the folder of evidence, abandoning the vehicle in the mud.
I ran on foot for hours, completely exhausted and deeply terrified for Emma's actual safety.
I reached the edge of a high cliff overlooking a winding, raging river below.
A police helicopter suddenly crested the tree line, shining a massive, blinding spotlight directly onto me.
A voice boomed over the helicopter's megaphone, ordering me to drop my weapons and surrender immediately.

I looked down at the dark, churning water rushing violently a hundred feet below my boots.
I heard the distinct sound of a sniper rifle chambering a round from the helicopter above.
