Chapter 2 - The Judge's Shadow

I tightened my grip on Diana's handcuffs despite the judge's threat.
Judge Harrington marched up my driveway with absolute arrogant authority.
He demanded that I release his wife immediately or face federal kidnapping charges.
I told him his wife chained a sick child to a post in ninety-degree heat.
The judge laughed a dry, humorless laugh that echoed through the quiet neighborhood.
He pulled a gold-plated smartphone from his expensive suit pocket.
He dialed a number and put the phone on speaker for me to hear.
My police captain's voice came through the tiny speaker, sounding nervous and apologetic.
The captain ordered me to stand down and release Diana Harrington immediately.
I felt a sickening knot form deep in my stomach.
The corruption ran deeper than a simple neighborhood homeowners association.
Suddenly, Emma let out a weak, agonizing gasp from the porch swing.
Her medical monitor changed from a rapid beep to a solid, terrifying tone.
I shoved Diana toward her husband and rushed back to my daughter.
Emma's eyes rolled back in her head as her tiny body went completely limp.
I scooped her up in my arms and sprinted toward my patrol car.
I threw her into the backseat and jumped behind the steering wheel.
I ignored the judge screaming legal threats as I peeled out of the driveway.
I turned on my lights and sirens, weaving frantically through the suburban streets.
I carried her into the emergency room shouting for immediate medical assistance.
A team of doctors rushed her away behind a set of heavy swinging doors.
I sat in the sterile waiting room for two agonizing hours with my head in my hands.
The head cardiologist finally walked out with a deeply troubled look on his face.
He told me they managed to stabilize her heart rate just in time.
I asked him if the Texas heat had caused the sudden cardiac failure.
The doctor shook his head slowly and looked nervously around the empty hallway.
He lowered his voice and handed me a printed diagnostic report.
He explained that Emma's pacemaker had not failed due to environmental stress.

The device's internal logs showed it had been remotely accessed and intentionally shut down.
Someone had hacked my daughter's heart monitor thirty minutes before I arrived home.
