Chapter 10 - The Texas Heat

Diana Harrington looked incredibly triumphant as she aimed the heavy rifle directly at my sick child.
She commanded me to drop to my knees and place the hunting knife on the concrete roof.
I slowly lowered myself to the ground, calculating the exact distance between us with cold precision.
I placed the knife down, but I kept my hand resting dangerously close to the hilt.
Diana began a long, arrogant speech about how she would rebuild her empire after disposing of us.
She loved the sound of her own voice far too much, and that was her ultimate, fatal flaw.
As she looked down to adjust her grip on the heavy rifle, I snatched the knife from the ground.
I threw the heavy blade with all the strength left in my battered, exhausted arm.
The knife spun through the hot Texas air and embedded itself deeply into Diana's right shoulder.
She screamed in absolute agony, dropping the assault rifle onto the metal floor of the helicopter.
I sprinted forward instantly, tackling her brutally against the side of the aircraft.
I pulled the heavy plastic zip-ties from my pocket and bound her wrists tightly together.
I dragged her out of the helicopter and shoved her face-first onto the hot concrete roof.
Suddenly, the deafening roar of massive jet engines completely overwhelmed the quiet rooftop.
Three heavily armored FBI tactical helicopters swarmed the building, completely surrounding the helipad.
The agent I had called earlier stepped out of the lead chopper, flanked by a dozen heavily armed men.
The judge had lied about paying off the agent; my trusted friend had actually brought the real cavalry.
They immediately arrested Diana, reading her federal rights as she screamed and cursed wildly at them.
Paramedics rushed from the second helicopter, taking Emma from my arms and immediately starting life-saving procedures.
Two long, exhausting months passed before the massive legal trials finally came to an end.
Diana and the judge were both sentenced to federal prison for the rest of their miserable, pathetic lives.
My name was entirely cleared, my badge was restored with full honors, and the corrupt officials were deeply purged.
Emma fully recovered from her traumatic ordeal, her bright smile finally returning to light up my world.
We sold our house and moved to a beautiful, sprawling ranch completely free from any homeowners association.
I was sitting peacefully on my new porch, watching Emma chase fireflies in the warm evening breeze.
A delivery truck pulled up to the dirt driveway, and the driver handed me a small, unmarked wooden box.

I opened the lid carefully, my heart completely stopping when I saw a shiny new brass padlock resting inside.
Tucked neatly underneath the heavy metal lock was a handwritten note that read, "The National HOA Council does not forgive its fallen presidents."
