Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Machine

The shrill ringing of the burner phone echoed violently in the confined space of the airlock.

Sarah carefully passed the cheap plastic device through the titanium bars and placed it into my trembling hands.

I stared at the blinking green screen, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.

I pressed the answer button and slowly brought the phone to my ear.

"If you are hearing this, Evelyn, my children have tried to kill you," Harrison's warm, familiar voice said through the speaker.

A tear slipped down my cheek at the sound of the man I loved, speaking to me from beyond the grave.

"I knew Richard would eventually compromise the bank manager, so I installed a secondary failsafe," the recorded message continued.

"The ledger inside this vault contains irrefutable proof that my children are running a massive international smuggling syndicate."

Harrison's voice grew stern, lacking the gentle warmth he usually reserved for our chess matches.

"Type my birthdate into the keypad, reversed, and the titanium bars will immediately retract," the recording instructed.

"I love you, Evelyn, now go destroy those monsters."

The line went dead, leaving me in stunned silence as the oxygen in the room grew dangerously thin.

I quickly calculated his birthdate, November fourth, nineteen forty, and reversed the numbers in my head.

"Zero, four, nine, one, four, zero, one, one," I read aloud to Sarah, who was already stretching her arm through the bars again.

She punched the numbers into the keypad with frantic, desperate speed.

The airlock instantly flooded with fresh, cool air as the heavy titanium bars slowly retracted into the ceiling.

The massive, circular steel door of the primary vault hissed and swung open automatically.

We rushed inside the vault, completely ignoring the stacks of gold bars and millions in wrapped cash.

Sitting alone on a simple wooden pedestal in the center of the room was a thick, leather-bound ledger.

I grabbed the book, knowing it was the ultimate weapon needed to end this terrifying war.

We ran back to the private elevator and rode it up to the main lobby of the bank.

Edward was nowhere to be found, and the lobby was completely empty except for the shattered glass.

We pushed through the broken doors and stepped out into the bright, crisp morning sunlight.

A fleet of black SUVs was parked aggressively along the street, surrounded by heavily armed federal agents.

A tall man wearing a dark suit and an FBI badge stepped forward, holding out his hand.

"Mrs. Hutchinson, you are completely safe now, please hand over the ledger," the lead agent said with a reassuring smile.

I took a step toward him, overwhelmingly relieved that the authorities had finally arrived to help.

The agent took the heavy ledger from my hands and immediately tucked it under his arm.

He looked at me with a cold, sinister smirk that made my blood run entirely cold.

"Thank you for doing the heavy lifting, Evelyn, Richard will be very pleased to have this back," the corrupt agent whispered.
