Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

The memory of the funeral still played like a terrible nightmare in my mind.
Harrison's three children had stood by the mahogany casket wearing designer mourning clothes and crying completely fake tears.
They had refused to look at me, whispering cruel insults under their breath whenever I walked past them.
I had spent my entire life in poverty, and they viewed me as nothing more than a gold-digging parasite.
They never understood the genuine love that Harrison and I shared over our daily chess games in the courtyard.
Now, sitting in the sprawling penthouse suite we once shared, the silence was absolutely deafening.
Mister Sterling, Harrison's personal attorney, stood across from me with a perfectly neutral expression.
His expensive tailored suit seemed entirely out of place in a room filled with such profound, lingering grief.
He handed me a thick, heavy manila envelope with a dark wax seal on the back.
"Please, sit down," Sterling instructed softly, gesturing toward the vintage furniture.
"The truth inside may be difficult to process," he added with a tone that sent a sudden chill down my spine.
I slowly lowered myself onto the velvet armchair that Harrison used to love.
The scent of his imported cedar cologne still lingered on the expensive fabric.
I broke the wax seal on the envelope and pulled out a stack of dense, intimidating legal documents.
It was not a standard last will and testament as I had expected.
It was a highly classified financial dossier containing bank records, wire transfers, and offshore account numbers.
Attached to the front of the dossier was a handwritten letter from my late husband.
My eyes scanned the elegant cursive handwriting that I knew so intimately well.
Harrison confessed that his vast empire had been systematically looted by his three children over the past decade.
He had married me not just for companionship, but to legally block them from accessing his final trust fund.
The documents in my hands were the only existing proof of their massive, coordinated embezzlement scheme.
"They are going to face federal prison if the authorities see this," I whispered in absolute shock.
I looked up, expecting to see a sympathetic lawyer ready to help me execute Harrison's final wishes.
Instead, I saw Sterling casually walking toward the heavy oak double doors of the penthouse.
He reached out and slid the solid brass deadbolt firmly into place.
The loud click echoed through the silent room like a gunshot.
"Why did you just lock the door?" I asked, my voice shaking with sudden, overwhelming terror.
Sterling turned to face me, his polite demeanor completely vanishing into a cold, predatory glare.
"Because Richard and his siblings paid me a significant fortune to ensure you never leave this room," he stated flatly.

He reached inside his tailored jacket and slowly pulled out a sleek, black handgun with a silencer attached.
"Hand over the envelope, Evelyn, and I promise your tragic heart attack will look completely natural."
