Chapter 6 - The Marble Steps

Edward looked completely out of place standing in front of the elegant bank with a military-grade weapon.
He was wearing a perfectly tailored designer suit, completely soaked by the lingering morning drizzle.
"You really thought you could just walk into our bank and steal our inheritance, Evelyn?" Edward mocked.
He raised the submachine gun, aiming the barrel directly at my chest with shaking hands.
Edward was the youngest, the most spoiled, and clearly the most desperate of Harrison's children.
"Your father left that money to a charitable trust because you three are criminals," I shouted back, standing my ground.
"It is our money, and I am not going to let a senile old woman take it away from me!" Edward screamed.
Sarah stepped out of the delivery van, her hands raised in a placating, peaceful gesture.
"Edward, please, you do not want to commit a murder in broad daylight on a city street," Sarah pleaded softly.
Edward's wild, bloodshot eyes darted toward Sarah, his finger trembling dangerously on the trigger.
"Shut up, you pathetic little nurse, or I will kill you first!" he roared in absolute panic.
The distraction was exactly what Sarah had intended to create.
She suddenly dove to the ground, grabbing a heavy, loose piece of cobblestone from the street gutter.
She hurled the heavy stone directly at Edward's face with stunning accuracy.
The rock struck his forehead with a loud crack, causing him to stumble backward in shock and pain.
The submachine gun fired wildly into the air, shattering the glass of the bank's ornate front doors.
I did not hesitate for a single second, rushing up the marble steps with a speed I forgot I possessed.
I slammed the heavy metallic briefcase directly into Edward's stomach, knocking the wind completely out of his lungs.
He collapsed onto the wet marble, dropping the weapon as he gasped desperately for air.
Sarah rushed up the steps behind me, grabbing the discarded gun and tossing it down a nearby storm drain.
We dragged a groaning Edward through the shattered glass doors and into the luxurious lobby of the bank.
The bank manager, a distinguished older man named Mister Higgins, rushed out of his office in a panic.
He froze when he saw me standing over the defeated son of his wealthiest client.
"Mister Higgins, Harrison authorized me to access his primary private vault," I stated with absolute authority.
Higgins recognized me immediately, having met me multiple times when Harrison brought me to the city.
He nodded nervously, signaling for the security guards to stand down and ignore the shattered glass.
"Of course, Mrs. Hutchinson, please follow me to the subterranean vault immediately," Higgins stammered.
We left Edward groaning on the lobby floor and followed the manager into a private, reinforced elevator.
The elevator descended deep into the bedrock of the city, arriving at a massive, circular steel vault door.
"You simply need to press your thumb against the biometric scanner to open the airlock," Higgins instructed politely.
I stepped forward, feeling a massive wave of triumph as I pressed my thumb against the glowing green glass.

The scanner beeped loudly, but instead of flashing green, the entire panel turned a harsh, glaring red.
A loud, mechanical siren blared, and heavy titanium bars slammed down from the ceiling, completely trapping us inside the narrow airlock.
