Chapter 7 - The Hospital Breach

The terrifying reality of the plane tickets sent a massive jolt of pure adrenaline straight into my bloodstream.

Michael was planning to snatch Emily while she was completely defenseless in her medically induced coma.

I checked the digital clock on his mahogany desk, realizing I only had exactly two hours before his scheduled flight.

I completely ignored the strict legal rules of my house arrest, knowing the ankle monitor would eventually alert the authorities.

I sprinted out of the corporate building and aggressively hailed a yellow taxi from the busy evening street.

"Take me to the county hospital as fast as you legally can, please," I instructed the driver while shoving a hundred-dollar bill through the partition.

The taxi weaved violently through the heavy evening traffic, every red light feeling like a personal attack on my sanity.

When we finally arrived at the hospital, I saw two familiar police cruisers parked directly in front of the emergency entrance.

The authorities had already been notified about my ankle monitor violation, and they were actively searching the perimeter for me.

I slipped around to the back of the massive building, finding the heavily chained loading dock doors.

I squeezed my body tightly through a narrow gap between the metal gates, tearing my sweatshirt on the sharp chain link.

I navigated the dark, winding corridors of the hospital basement, dodging the busy laundry carts and maintenance workers.

I knew the pediatric intensive care unit was heavily secured on the fourth floor behind locked electronic doors.

I found a nearby utility closet and grabbed a discarded white doctor's coat, slipping it quickly over my dirty clothes.

I grabbed a clipboard from a vacant nurse's station and walked confidently toward the main elevators, keeping my head down.

I stepped off onto the fourth floor, my heart pounding so loudly I thought the security cameras could actually hear it.

A heavy-set security guard was sitting directly in front of the pediatric wing doors, drinking coffee and watching a small television.

I needed a massive distraction to clear the hallway without raising any suspicion about my real identity.

I quietly walked into an empty supply room and found a small plastic trash can filled with discarded paper towels.

I pulled a lighter from my pocket, struck a bright flame, and dropped it directly into the paper waste.

Thick, dark smoke quickly filled the small room, instantly triggering the loud, piercing shrieks of the hospital fire alarm system.

Flashing strobe lights blinded the hallway as the security guard jumped up from his chair and ran toward the smoking supply room.

I used the chaotic distraction to swipe a stolen keycard and slip silently through the heavy pediatric doors.

I sprinted down the sterile white hallway, reading the room numbers frantically until I reached Emily's designated suite.

I burst through the door, ready to scoop my daughter into my arms and run for our lives.

The hospital bed was completely empty, with the crisp white sheets thrown messily onto the cold linoleum floor.

A terrifying trail of fresh, dark crimson blood led directly from the empty bed to the heavy emergency stairwell door.
