Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Ally

I dropped the digital tablet onto the cold concrete floor, my hands shaking violently with sheer panic.
Michael had completely anticipated my only backup plan and had taken my best friend hostage in our own dining room.
I rushed to the cell bars, gripping the cold steel and screaming for the guards to come back.
"You have to send police to my house right now, because my husband is hurting my friend!" I yelled desperately.
The female guard simply rolled her eyes, turned up the volume on her desk radio, and ignored my frantic pleas.
I paced the tiny cell like a trapped animal, realizing that my situation had escalated from a simple frame-up to absolute madness.
If I did not find a way out of this jail immediately, Rachel and Emily were both going to die.
Hours dragged by in agonizingly slow motion until a heavy set of keys jingled loudly down the hallway.
The cell door slid open with a harsh metallic grind, and the guard ordered me to step out into the corridor.
"You have a visitor in the legal consultation room, so keep your hands where I can see them," she commanded.
I walked down the long, sterile hallway, praying it was a public defender who would finally listen to my story.
When I entered the small, windowless meeting room, I was completely shocked to see Doctor Evans sitting at the metal table.
Beside him sat a sharp-looking woman in a tailored gray suit, holding a thick leather briefcase on her lap.
"I am truly sorry to intrude, Sarah, but I did not believe a single word your husband said at the hospital," Doctor Evans stated firmly.
He explained that the surgical team had found massive internal bruising on Emily that perfectly matched the profile of blunt force trauma.
"Arsenic poisoning does not cause a ruptured spleen, and I am willing to testify to that under oath," he declared.
He introduced the woman beside him as Jessica Vance, one of the most ruthless defense attorneys in the city.
"Doctor Evans called in a massive favor, and I am here to get you out of this nightmare," Jessica said confidently.
She pulled out a stack of legal documents, explaining that she had already filed an emergency motion for a bail hearing.
"We secured a judge who owes me a favor, and you will be released on strict house arrest by noon," she promised.
I wept openly, thanking them both profusely for believing a woman the entire world currently thought was a monster.
Jessica warned me that my release came with severe legal conditions that I could not break under any circumstances.
"You will wear an ankle monitor, and you cannot go anywhere near the hospital or your husband," she ordered sternly.
If I violated the perimeter of my assigned safe house, I would be thrown into a federal prison with no chance of bail.
By early afternoon, the judge granted the motion, and I walked out of the heavy glass doors of the courthouse.
Jessica drove me to a secure hotel room she had rented under a completely fake corporate name.
"You are safe here, so just rest while I build a solid case against Michael," she instructed before leaving the room.
I sat on the edge of the hotel bed, finally breathing a sigh of temporary relief as the silence surrounded me.
I decided to take a quick shower to wash the terrible stench of the county jail off my exhausted body.
As I took off my provided clothing, I noticed a tiny, unnatural lump in the thick seam of my canvas hospital bag.
I carefully used a complimentary razor blade to slice open the fabric, revealing a small, black electronic device.

It was a highly advanced, military-grade listening bug completely woven into the fabric of the bag.
Michael had heard every single detail of my legal strategy, and he knew exactly where I was hiding.
