Chapter 3 - The Framed Mother

The heavy metal handcuffs clicked tightly around my wrists, sending a sharp jolt of panic through my entire body.
"You are making a terrible mistake, because my husband is the one who hurt her!" I screamed in sheer desperation.
The taller officer ignored my pleas and firmly guided me toward the harsh fluorescent lights of the main hallway.
I planted my feet into the linoleum floor, refusing to leave the hospital while my daughter was undergoing emergency surgery.
"I am not going anywhere until I know my child is safe from that monster," I stated with absolute defiance.
A plainclothes detective stepped out from an adjacent room, holding a clear plastic evidence bag.
He held the bag up to the light, revealing a small, unmarked amber glass vial inside.
"Your husband gave this to our officers when he arrived at the hospital tonight," the detective explained calmly.
Michael had told them he found the vial hidden in my bedside table after I rushed Emily out of the house.
He claimed I suffered from extreme mental instability and had been secretly dosing our daughter to keep her sick and dependent on me.
"That is a complete lie, and he is just trying to cover up the fact that he kicked her!" I cried out.
The detective looked at me with eyes devoid of any sympathy or belief.
"We will let the toxicology report determine the truth, Missus Bennett," he replied coldly.
They marched me out of the emergency room, parading me in handcuffs past the staring nurses and shocked patients.
The cold night air hit my face as they forced me into the back of a waiting police cruiser.
I watched the glowing red letters of the hospital sign fade into the distance as the car drove toward the downtown precinct.
In the interrogation room, I sat silently on a metal chair that was bolted to the concrete floor.
The walls were painted a sickening shade of gray, and the air smelled heavily of stale coffee and industrial cleaner.
I repeatedly asked for a lawyer, knowing that anything I said could be twisted by Michael's elaborate lies.
Hours passed in agonizing silence, leaving me entirely alone with my terrifying thoughts about Emily's surgery.
Finally, the heavy metal door clicked open, and the lead detective walked back into the room.
He tossed a thick manila folder onto the metal table, letting out a heavy, exhausted sigh.
"Your daughter survived the surgery, but she is currently in a medically induced coma to help her heal," he stated flatly.
A massive wave of relief washed over me, closely followed by a sharp spike of renewed panic.
"I need to be at her bedside when she wakes up," I begged him desperately.
The detective shook his head, pulling a formal legal document from the folder.
"Child Protective Services has officially taken emergency custody of Emily until this investigation is resolved," he explained.
He pushed a terrifying photograph across the table, showing the exact amber vial from the evidence bag.
"We expedited the lab results, and that vial contained highly concentrated arsenic," he revealed darkly.
I gasped in pure horror, realizing how flawlessly Michael had orchestrated this entire nightmare.
He had planted the poison just in case I ever found the courage to take her to a doctor.
"You have to check the security cameras at my house, because you will see he is the abuser," I pleaded one last time.
The detective picked up his police radio as it suddenly crackled with urgent static.
"Detective, we just searched the mother's winter coat that was left in the hospital waiting room," a voice echoed through the speaker.
The detective pressed the button to respond, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute suspicion.

"Did you find anything relevant in her coat pockets?" the detective asked over the radio.
"Yes sir, we found a crumpled receipt for rat poison purchased entirely in cash yesterday afternoon," the radio replied.
