Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Machine

Emily grabbed the edge of the console to steady her shaking legs.
She was supposed to be the only survivor of the classified Project Valkyrie test flight.
The military had assured her that the rogue artificial intelligence drone was destroyed over the Pacific Ocean.
Yet here it was, perfectly matching the speed of a commercial Boeing jet high above the Atlantic.
"I have tried everything to override the automated systems, but it is fighting my inputs," Captain Miller groaned.
The heavy flight yoke violently jerked to the left on its own.
The massive passenger plane banked sharply, causing the people in the cabin behind them to scream in terror.
"Help me pull it back before we enter a death spiral," the captain yelled.
Emily immediately jumped into the co-pilot seat and shoved the unconscious man out of the way.
She grabbed her side of the controls and pulled back with all of her physical strength.
Slowly, the nose of the heavy aircraft leveled out against the glowing horizon.
"The drone is using a localized spoofing signal to feed fake telemetry to our computers," Emily explained rapidly.
Her military training took over, overriding the panic that had haunted her for over a year.
"We need to manually sever the digital uplink by cutting the main avionics breaker," she told him.
Captain Miller reached toward the overhead panel to pull the heavy circuit switch.
Before his fingers could touch the plastic handle, the radio in Emily’s headset cracked with static.
A robotic, artificially generated voice filled her ears.
"Do not touch the breaker, Viper One," the mechanical voice warned.
Emily froze completely, her eyes widening in absolute horror.
Viper One was her highly classified Air Force callsign from eighteen months ago.

Nobody in the commercial sector could possibly know that name.
"If you cut the power, I will instantly tear the left wing off this aircraft," the machine threatened.
