Chapter 9 - The Cargo Hold

The blaring alarm meant the ship's crew knew there was an intruder on board.

Jack descended the steep metal staircase into the freezing, dimly lit cargo hold.

The air smelled strongly of diesel fuel, sea salt, and rusted iron.

He navigated through the narrow, claustrophobic aisles between massive shipping containers.

He checked the painted numbers on the steel walls, desperately looking for sector B.

Three armed mercenaries suddenly appeared at the end of the aisle, their flashlights cutting through the gloom.

Jack raised his stolen rifle and fired a precise volley of warning shots over their heads.

The mercenaries scrambled for cover behind the heavy cargo crates.

"Give up the girl, and I will let you live!" Jack shouted over the deafening alarm.

The guards responded with a lethal barrage of bullets that shredded the wooden crates near Jack's head.

Jack realized he could not waste time fighting a prolonged battle.

He shot the overhead steam pipes, releasing a massive cloud of thick, blinding white vapor into the aisle.

Using the steam as cover, Jack sprinted down a parallel corridor, bypassing the pinned-down guards entirely.

He finally reached sector B, where a single, heavily padlocked green container sat isolated in the corner.

Jack grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from a nearby tool rack.

He slammed the crowbar against the padlock repeatedly, his muscles burning with furious, desperate energy.

With a loud, metallic crack, the heavy lock finally shattered into pieces.

Jack threw the heavy steel doors wide open.

Inside the freezing container, huddled in a corner wrapped in a thin blanket, was the little girl from the bakery.

"Jack?" Lena whispered, her intense blue eyes wide with hope and fear.

Jack dropped the crowbar and rushed forward, pulling her into a tight, desperate embrace.

"I am here, sweetie, I have got you," Jack cried, holding her close to his chest.

Suddenly, the heavy steel doors behind them slammed shut, plunging them into total darkness.

The unmistakable sound of a new, heavy padlock clicking into place echoed from the outside.
