Chapter 9 - The Trial and The Fall

The trial of the Sterling family was the biggest media spectacle the state had seen in a decade.
National news networks camped outside the federal courthouse. The story of a corrupt billionaire empire brought down by a Navy mother and a teenage whistleblower captivated the country.
Sarah sat in the front row every single day. She watched as witness after witness took the stand. Injured dock workers told their stories. Small business owners wept as they described the extortion.
But the most powerful moment came when Maya took the stand.
The brave teenager looked directly at Marcus Sterling and played the audio of him bragging about her brother’s death. The jury gasped. Even the hardened judge looked physically sickened.
The defense tried to tear Maya apart, accusing her of being a disgruntled, rebellious teen. But the forensic evidence was ironclad. The offshore accounts matched the dates. The audio was verified.
When the verdict was read, the silence in the courtroom was absolute.
Guilty on all counts.
Arthur Sterling, the untouchable god of Oakhaven, collapsed into his chair. Marcus cursed and spat at the jury as he was dragged out by bailiffs. Greg simply wept, a broken, pathetic man who had traded his soul for nothing.
Outside the courthouse, Sarah was swarmed by reporters. Microphones were shoved in her face.

"Chief Jenkins! How does it feel to take down the most powerful family in the state?" one reporter shouted.
Sarah stopped on the courthouse steps. She looked into the cameras. "I didn't take down an empire," she said clearly. "I protected my family. Let this be a warning to anyone who thinks money and power can buy them immunity. The truth always finds a way out of the dark."
