Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

Forty-eight hours later, the town of Oakhaven was in chaos.

The federal raid had triggered a massive domino effect. Police Chief Miller was arrested in his driveway. The medical examiner was pulled out of his office in handcuffs. Mayor Hayes resigned in disgrace and immediately signed a plea deal, agreeing to testify against the Sterlings in exchange for leniency.

In a sterile interrogation room at the federal building, Greg Sterling sat handcuffed to a steel table. He looked pathetic. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled.

The door opened, and Sarah walked in, accompanied by David Vance.

Greg looked up, hope flashing in his eyes. "Sarah! You came. Tell them, Sarah. Tell them Arthur manipulated me. I can testify against him! I can give them everything!"

"We already have everything, Greg," Vance said coldly, dropping a massive file on the table. "Arthur is facing three consecutive life sentences. Marcus is facing the same for the murder of Toby Cole. And you... you are facing forty years for conspiracy, child endangerment, and accessory to attempted murder."

"Forty years?!" Greg shrieked, pulling at his handcuffs. "I didn't hit him! Marcus did!"

"But you opened the door," Sarah said, stepping closer to the table. "You let the monsters in, Greg. You sat in a comfortable chair and listened to your son beg for his life."

"I was securing our future!" Greg cried. "I was doing it for the family!"

"You did it for yourself," Sarah said, her voice deadly calm. She pulled a document from her jacket and slid it across the table. "Sign it."

Greg looked down. It was a complete relinquishment of parental rights.

"If you fight this in family court, I will personally make sure the judge hears the audio of you turning up the TV every single day of the trial," Sarah promised. "Sign it, and I will never let Ethan see your face again."

Greg’s hands shook as he picked up the pen. He signed his name, officially erasing himself from his son's life.

Sarah took the paper, turned her back on him, and walked out of the room without another word.
