Chapter 10 - The Healing

Six months later.
The heavy, oppressive fog that seemed to constantly hang over Oakhaven had finally lifted. The town was rebuilding. Independent businesses were returning, and a new, uncorrupted police force had been sworn in.
Sarah didn't live in Oakhaven anymore. She had purchased a beautiful, sunlit house on the coast of San Diego, close to the naval base.
It was a bright Saturday morning. The smell of pancakes filled the kitchen.
Ethan, now nine years old, sat at the kitchen island. He was still wearing a small brace on his left arm, but the bruises were entirely gone. More importantly, the light had returned to his eyes. He was laughing, telling a joke to the girl sitting next to him.
Maya, now officially adopted by Sarah, was pouring syrup onto her plate. She looked completely different. The shadows under her eyes had faded. She was thriving in her new high school, applying to colleges with a fierce determination to become a civil rights attorney.
Sarah stood by the stove, watching them. Her heart, which had been hardened by months of war and betrayal, felt overwhelmingly full.
The monsters were locked in concrete cages. The empire was dismantled. The wealth they had hoarded was being distributed back to the victims they had destroyed.
The doorbell rang. Sarah walked over and opened it.
Standing on the porch was Thomas Vance, holding a small box wrapped in brown paper. He smiled warmly. "I was in the neighborhood. Thought I'd drop this off."
Sarah opened the box. Inside was a brand new, indestructible titanium watch.
"A gift for Ethan," Thomas said. "Just in case."

Sarah smiled, looking back into the kitchen where her son and daughter were laughing together. "Thank you, Thomas. But I don't think he’ll need it. We’re safe now."
She closed the door, walking back into the warmth of her home. The war was over. The battle was won. And for the first time in a very long time, Sarah Jenkins was finally at peace.
