Chapter 5 - The War Room

I didn't sleep that night. I turned my home office into a war room.
For forty-four years, I had used my wealth to isolate myself. Now, I was going to use it to annihilate Victor Vance. I hired three private investigative firms. I mobilized an army of forensic accountants. If Victor wanted to play dirty, I was going to bury him.
The next few weeks were a delicate balancing act. By day, I was ruthlessly hunting down Victor's offshore accounts, looking for the skeletons I knew he was hiding.
By night, I was learning how to be a father.
It was terrifying. The first time Lily cried for her mother, I panicked. I didn't know what to do. I awkwardly sat on the edge of her bed, my heart breaking. But then, I just wrapped my arms around her and let her cry into my expensive tailored shirt.
"I miss her," Lily sobbed.

"I know, sweetheart," I whispered, resting my chin on her head. "I know. But I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
Slowly, the penthouse stopped feeling like a museum and started feeling like a home. There were crayons on the glass coffee table. Cartoons playing on the eighty-inch television. For the first time in my life, I couldn't wait to leave the office and go home.
