Chapter 2 - The Final Promise

I had spent my entire adult life building walls. I negotiated billion-dollar mergers without breaking a sweat. I fired entire executive suites without losing a night of sleep. But standing in that hospital room, staring at the dying woman who held the key to my bloodline, my walls shattered.

"I don't know how to be a father," I confessed, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "I don't even know how to be a human being half the time. My life is boardrooms and empty penthouses."

"She doesn't need a boardroom," Clara smiled weakly. "She just needs someone who notices when her shoes are broken. You noticed, Alexander. You have a heart. Your father buried his, but yours is still beating."

The door creaked open. Lily walked in, holding a plastic cup with a pink straw. When she saw me, her eyes widened in pure shock.

"The shoe man!" she gasped, looking down at her bright purple sneakers, then back up at me.

"Hello, Lily," I said, forcing my voice to steady.

Clara reached out, taking Lily's small hand. "Lily, sweetheart. This nice man... his name is Alexander. And he is going to make sure you are safe when I go to sleep."

Lily looked at me, her innocent eyes searching my face. I stepped forward, dropping to one knee so I was eye-level with her.

"I promise you, Lily," I said, my voice thick with an emotion I hadn't felt in decades. "You will never have to walk in broken shoes ever again."

Clara Kensington passed away at 3:14 AM that night. I was sitting in the chair beside her bed. Lily was asleep in my arms.
