Chapter 1 - The Room at the End of the Hall

My phone nearly slipped from my hand. I didn't call my assistant. I didn't notify my board of directors that I was canceling the rest of my week. I simply flagged down a yellow cab, shoved a hundred-dollar bill at the driver, and told him to get to Mt. Sinai Hospital as fast as legally possible.

The hospital corridors smelled of bleach and quiet desperation. I found room 412 at the end of a long, sterile hallway.

I pushed the door open.

There, lying amidst a tangle of wires and the rhythmic, hollow beep of a heart monitor, was Clara Kensington. She looked incredibly frail, her skin pale, but her eyes—the exact same shade of striking hazel as my late father's—were bright and sharp.

Lily was not in the room.

"She's in the cafeteria," Clara whispered, her voice barely a rasp. "The nurses gave her a coupon for a strawberry milkshake. It buys us about twenty minutes."

I stood at the foot of the bed, my mind spinning. "The birth certificate. Is it real?"

Clara gave a weak, sad nod. "Your father and I... it was a long time ago. Before he built his empire. Before he married your mother. We were young, and we made a mistake. When I found out I was pregnant, he paid me to disappear. He wanted a clean legacy."

"And Lily?" I asked, my voice trembling. "She's only six."

"I was sick, Alexander. For a long time. Lily was a miracle I had much later in life. But your father... he is the only family she legally has left. And he's dead." Clara coughed, a violent, shaking sound. "I have no money. No relatives. When I die, she goes into the foster system. Unless..."

"Unless what?"

Clara looked at me, tears spilling hot and fast down her sunken cheeks. "Unless her brother steps up."
