Chapter 5 - The wolf at the door

The sterile, white walls of the hospital room seemed to spin violently around me.

I stared at the frail woman in the hospital bed, completely paralyzed by her shocking confession.

Lily, the brave little girl with the yellow raincoat, was my own flesh and blood.

Before I could even utter a single word in response, my cell phone began to vibrate violently in my pocket.

It was the head of my private security detail calling from back at the downtown penthouse.

He shouted frantically over the line that heavily armed men had just breached the building lobby.

I sprinted out of the hospital, my mind racing with absolute panic and undeniable protective rage.

I drove my sports car recklessly through the crowded Seattle streets, breaking every single speed limit.

When I reached my luxury apartment complex, the massive glass front doors were completely shattered into thousands of pieces.

My highly trained security guards were lying unconscious on the cold marble floor, bleeding from their heads.

I pulled a licensed, loaded handgun from my glove compartment and rushed straight into the private elevator.

The metal doors slid open to my penthouse floor, revealing utter destruction and chaos.

Expensive furniture was completely overturned, and the massive floor-to-ceiling windows were blown out.

I screamed Lily's name at the top of my lungs until my throat felt raw and painful.

A dark, chilling, and terribly familiar voice echoed casually from the outdoor balcony terrace.

I stepped outside to see a tall man in a tailored suit holding my crying daughter tightly by the collar of her shirt.

It was my estranged older brother, Marcus, smiling at me with pure, unadulterated malice.
