Chapter 2 - The harsh truth

The deafening sound of shattering glass echoed violently through the small, cramped apartment.
I instinctively shielded Lily with my own body as the mysterious intruder escaped into the raging storm outside.
The paramedics were entirely too focused on keeping the dying mother alive to chase after the fleeing man.
They quickly loaded the unconscious woman onto a yellow stretcher and rushed her out to the waiting ambulance.
I wrapped my expensive wool coat tightly around Lily and drove closely behind them to Seattle General Hospital.
We sat together in the cold, sterile waiting room for what felt like an absolute eternity.
Lily eventually fell asleep from sheer exhaustion, her small head resting heavily against my chest.
A stern-looking doctor finally emerged through the swinging double doors, wiping sweat from his tired forehead.
He told me they had miraculously managed to stabilize her mother's heart rate just in the nick of time.
But his exhausted face quickly shifted into a grim, deeply concerned shadow.
He explained that her mother had not contracted a natural illness or suffered a sudden stroke.
Massive amounts of a rare, synthetic sedative were deliberately injected into her bloodstream.
Someone had intentionally and methodically tried to murder this woman in her own home.

Before I could even process this horrifying reality, two armed police officers walked into the waiting area accompanied by a stern woman holding a clipboard.
The woman flashed a state badge and coldly declared she was from Child Protective Services, here to take the little girl into immediate state custody.
