Chapter 3 - The hidden secret

I stood up slowly and quietly, careful not to wake the exhausted, sleeping little girl in my arms.

I looked the strict social worker straight in the eye and absolutely refused to hand Lily over to a stranger.

I used every ounce of my corporate authority, my vast wealth, and my high-powered legal team to demand a temporary emergency foster placement.

After an hour of intense arguments and threatening phone calls to local politicians, the state authorities reluctantly agreed.

I was granted exactly forty-eight hours to keep Lily safe in my secure, high-rise penthouse.

The next morning, I hired an elite private security team to guard the front door while she slept peacefully.

I knew she needed proper clothes and familiar toys, so I drove back to the crime scene at her apartment.

The police had already cleared the area, leaving yellow crime scene tape stretched across the broken door.

I packed a small suitcase with Lily's dresses, her favorite shoes, and a worn-out stuffed bear.

While reaching far under her mother's bed to find a missing sneaker, my hand hit a heavy, cold metal lockbox.

The heavy steel lock was already broken, likely smashed by the intruder I had seen the day before.

I opened the heavy lid, expecting to find cheap jewelry or perhaps some emergency cash hidden away.

Instead, my heart completely stopped in my chest.

The box was absolutely filled with dozens of surveillance photographs of me.

They were candid, highly detailed shots taken outside my store, my apartment, and my gym over the last five entire years.
