Chapter 8 - Fire and Water

The explosion ripped through the pier, sending wood and fire into the sky.
I dove behind a steel shipping container as the blast wave hit.
The shockwave threw Volkov and his men to the ground.
I heard the splash of Emma and her mother hitting the freezing ocean.
I drew my weapon and stepped out of the smoke.
I shot three of Volkov’s guards before they could even stand up.
Volkov crawled toward his dropped rifle, bleeding from his head.
I kicked the gun away and pressed my barrel to his forehead.
He laughed and spit blood onto my shoes.
He told me I was too late.
I pulled the trigger and ended his reign over the city.
I sprinted to the edge of the pier and looked down.
The dark water was churning violently.
I stripped off my heavy coat and dived into the freezing depths.
The cold hit me like a physical punch to the chest.

I opened my eyes underwater and searched frantically.
I saw a shadowy figure sinking toward the bottom.
