Chapter 7 - Pier 44

The docks were completely deserted when my SUV pulled up.
Freezing rain lashed against the windshield.
I stepped out alone, carrying a heavy metal briefcase.
Volkov stood at the end of the pier surrounded by heavily armed guards.
Emma and a bruised woman were tied to chairs near the edge of the water.
The woman had Antonio’s eyes.
She looked at me with a mixture of hope and pure terror.
Volkov smiled and demanded the signed transfer documents.
I walked slowly toward him, keeping my hands visible.
I told him the documents were in the briefcase.
He gestured for one of his men to take it from me.
The guard grabbed the case and placed it on a wooden crate.
Volkov opened the latches with greedy eyes.
He looked inside and his smile instantly vanished.
It wasn't paper inside the case.
May you like
It was a rigged timer ticking down from three seconds.
I shouted for the woman to push Emma into the water.
