Chapter 6 - The Ransom

I rushed into the panic room, but it was empty.

A secret escape hatch in the floor had been forced open from the outside.

The Russians had used the frontal assault as a distraction.

They had tunneled into the estate's old drainage system.

I felt a rage I had never experienced before.

I ordered my remaining men to fall back and regroup.

We secured the perimeter and cleared out the surviving attackers.

I sat in my ruined office with blood on my hands.

The phone rang again.

It was Volkov himself.

He told me he now had both the mother and the child.

He demanded I sign over all my shipping ports to his family.

If I refused, I would never see my niece again.

He gave me exactly one hour to meet him at Pier 44.

I agreed to his terms without hesitation.

I hung up the phone and opened a hidden safe behind my desk.

I pulled out a heavy military-grade explosive device.

I wasn't going to give him my ports.

I was going to give him hell.
