Marco lowered his weapon and stared at me.
His face was completely blank.
Before I could speak, he raised his gun and pointed it at my chest.
He said he was sorry, but the Russians offered him half the city.
My mind raced as I calculated my odds of survival.
I dived behind a stone pillar just as Marco pulled the trigger.
Bullets chipped the marble inches from my face.
I fired blindly around the corner, hitting Marco in the shoulder.
He cursed and ran down the hallway toward the panic room.
My blood ran cold.
He was going after Emma.
I sprinted after him, ignoring the Russian soldiers breaching the front door.
I tackled Marco just as he reached the reinforced steel door.
We wrestled on the floor, fighting for control of his weapon.
A gunshot echoed through the narrow hallway.
Marco gasped and fell backward.
I looked up and saw Maria standing there with a smoking revolver.

Emma was gone.
