Chapter 4 - The Erased Past

I stared at the security badge, feeling like my entire reality was violently ripping apart.

I had absolutely no memory of ever working for a company called Apex Genetics.

I remembered graduating with a finance degree, meeting Sarah at a coffee shop, and building a quiet life in the suburbs.

I rushed back to the locked surveillance room, dragging the unconscious mercenary's heavy body with me.

I threw him onto the floor and began tearing through the classified files on the metal desk.

I found a thick medical folder with my name printed boldly across the cover.

I ripped it open and began reading the complex medical jargon covering the pages.

The documents detailed a highly experimental neuro-programming procedure.

According to the file, my memories of being an accountant were completely fabricated and surgically implanted into my brain.

I was a sleeper agent, and my frequent business trips were actually scheduled memory-wipe sessions to keep my true identity hidden.

A sudden gasp from the doorway made me spin around defensively.

Sarah was standing there, her clothes torn and her arm bleeding heavily from a deep cut.

She looked exhausted, completely terrified, and tightly gripping a silver handgun.

"You were never supposed to find this room, Mark," she cried, aiming the weapon directly at my chest.

I held my hands up, begging her to explain why our children were starving on the floor.

She lowered the gun slightly, tears streaming down her bruised face.

"I had to lock them away and starve them to lower their body temperatures," she confessed.

I stared at her in utter confusion, demanding to know why she would do something so horrific.

"Because the thermal drones circling our house right now can only detect healthy, warm bodies," she whispered.
