Chapter 3 - The Forgotten Skills

The phone call disconnected, leaving me in a state of absolute shock.

I refused to believe that Sarah would ever hire mercenaries to murder our family.

A loud crash echoed from the back of the house, snapping me out of my thoughts.

Someone had just broken through the glass sliding door in the kitchen.

I carried the kids back inside, locked them inside the downstairs bathroom, and told Lily to stay hidden in the bathtub.

I grabbed a heavy kitchen knife from the counter and crept toward the dining room shadows.

A man dressed in black tactical gear stepped into the moonlight, his weapon raised.

He moved with military precision, scanning the corners of the room for any signs of movement.

Without even thinking, my body reacted completely on its own.

I stepped out of the shadows, grabbed the barrel of his rifle, and forcefully twisted it upward.

I delivered a brutal strike to his throat, dropping him to the floor in a matter of seconds.

I stood over the unconscious mercenary, staring at my own trembling hands in complete disbelief.

I was an accountant who spent his days looking at spreadsheets, not a trained killer.

I had no idea how I knew those advanced combat maneuvers.

I knelt down and searched the man's tactical vest for any clues.

I found a silver security badge tucked inside his front pocket.

The name on the badge read "Apex Genetics," but that was not what made my blood run entirely cold.

The badge featured a photograph of my own face, listing my rank as a senior field operative.
