Chapter 8 - The Falling Fortress

The flashing red emergency lights painted Mark's desperate face in a sinister glow.

"You are bluffing, you would never destroy your own operation," Ryan yelled, aiming the stolen rifle.

"I will gladly burn this empire to the ground if it means killing you," Mark spat back.

Chloe squeezed Ryan's shoulder and whispered urgently into his ear.

"He isn't bluffing, the explosives are tied to the main structural pillars, I saw the blueprints," she confirmed.

Ryan slowly lowered his weapon, realizing a shootout would doom them all.

"Fine, you win, just let Chloe and the kids walk out of here safely," Ryan offered in surrender.

Mark laughed, a cruel sound that echoed down the empty corridor.

"You don't get to make demands anymore, little brother," Mark sneered, raising his thumb.

Before Mark could press the button, the glass ceiling of the corridor suddenly shattered completely.

A heavy tactical flashbang grenade dropped from the ventilation shaft above, exploding with blinding light and deafening noise.

Mark dropped the detonator, clutching his ears and screaming in absolute agony.

Ryan did not hesitate for a single second.

He lunged forward, kicking the detonator down the hallway and tackling his brother to the floor.

Chloe grabbed the children and dragged them toward the emergency stairwell.

Ryan delivered a brutal punch to Mark's jaw, finally ending the nightmare of the past twenty-four hours.

He stood up, breathing heavily as he watched his evil brother lay unconscious on the sterile tiles.

Suddenly, a loud, robotic voice echoed from the building's intercom system.

"Automated self-destruct sequence initiated by fail-safe protocol, detonation in exactly two minutes," the voice announced.

Mark had rigged a dead-man's switch to his own heartbeat monitor.

By knocking him out, Ryan had inadvertently triggered the very explosion he was trying to prevent.

"Run!" Ryan screamed, sprinting toward the stairwell where his family was waiting.
