Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the Wall

Ryan stared at the kitchen vent in absolute disbelief.

His seven-year-old son, Leo, was violently trembling beside the refrigerator.

A half-crushed piece of bread was still clutched tightly in the boy's small hand.

His wife, Chloe, had immediately thrown herself in front of the wall to block his view.

Her chest heaved with rapid, panicked breaths.

"Ryan, do not open it," she pleaded, her voice cracking with terror.

But Ryan could not ignore the tiny, dirt-covered hand reaching through the metal slats.

He could not ignore the frail, terrified voice that had just called him Daddy.

He gently pushed Chloe aside, ignoring her desperate screams.

He grabbed the edges of the metal vent and ripped it completely out of the wall.

A foul smell of damp earth and stale air rushed out from the darkness.

Ryan reached into the narrow crawlspace and felt small, trembling shoulders.

He gently pulled the child out into the bright light of the kitchen.

It was a little girl, no older than six, wearing a filthy, oversized t-shirt.

Her large green eyes looked up at him, filled with a mixture of hope and profound fear.

Ryan felt the breath leave his lungs entirely.

The little girl had his exact nose, his exact jawline, and his exact bright green eyes.

He turned to his wife, his mind spinning in a thousand confusing directions.

"Chloe, who is this child and why is she in our walls?" Ryan demanded.

Chloe collapsed onto her knees, weeping uncontrollably into her hands.

Before she could answer, a massive, deafening crash echoed from the front of the house.

Someone was trying to break down their heavy oak front door with an axe.

Chloe looked up, her face pale as a ghost.

"They finally found her," Chloe whispered.
