Chapter 9 - The Chase in the Pines

The deafening roar of automatic gunfire ripped through the dusty air of the warehouse, shattering every remaining window.

Marcus immediately tackled Colonel Mitchell behind a massive steel saw machine as bullets sparked against the heavy metal.

Cartel mercenaries and corrupt deputies began firing wildly at one another in the confusion, completely destroying their fragile alliance.

Rowan screamed in desperate rage and charged toward the metal stairs leading to the catwalk, trying to reach his terrified daughter.

Miranda panicked during the intense crossfire, dropping her weapon and sprinting down the opposite fire escape into the dark woods.

Marcus knew that securing Brooke was the absolute priority, so he vaulted over a stack of lumber and sprinted toward the catwalk.

He intercepted a cartel thug aiming at Brooke, dropping the man with two precise shots to the chest.

Marcus grabbed Brooke's trembling hand and pulled her down a secondary maintenance chute, safely escaping the blood-soaked warehouse.

He handed Brooke to Colonel Mitchell, instructing them to head straight for the extraction point near the riverbed.

But Marcus could not leave yet, because he had seen Miranda running away with a silver laptop tucked tightly under her arm.

He knew that laptop contained the only unencrypted backup files of the security footage showing Lily's brutal beating.

Marcus tracked Miranda's frantic footprints through the dense, muddy terrain of the Appalachian pine forest.

He cornered her near a steep, rocky cliff overlooking the rushing, freezing waters of the mountain gorge.

Miranda backed away, her clothes torn and covered in mud, frantically clutching the silver laptop to her chest.

She hysterically tried to justify her actions, screaming that she had only closed the curtains to protect herself from her brothers' violent wrath.

Marcus stared at her with absolute disgust, stating that a real mother would have taken the blows to protect her child.

He slowly approached her, demanding she hand over the laptop so they could put her monstrous family behind bars forever.

Miranda sneered viciously, threatening to throw the laptop into the rushing river to destroy the evidence once and for all.

Suddenly, the blinding beams of two massive federal helicopters cut through the darkness, hovering directly over the gorge.

Dozens of heavily armed FBI agents rappelled down from the choppers, screaming for both of them to freeze and drop their weapons.

Marcus immediately lowered his sidearm, relieved that Colonel Mitchell’s federal backup had finally arrived to clean up the mess.

But a stern-faced FBI commander walked forward, placing Miranda in handcuffs before turning his cold gaze directly onto Marcus.

The commander announced that Marcus was being officially detained for conducting unauthorized, highly destructive military operations on domestic United States soil.
