Chapter 8 - The Devil's Bargain

The deafening explosion instantly plunged the massive lumber yard into absolute, blinding chaos.

Cartel mercenaries scrambled toward the roaring fire, desperately trying to secure the perimeter against an unseen enemy.

Marcus used the distraction to slip silently through the eastern loading docks, moving like a shadow among the towering stacks of pine.

He navigated the dark corridors of the main processing facility until he found the rusted warehouse where the Colonel was being held.

He quickly dispatched the two guards at the door with precise, silent takedowns, ensuring they could not raise any alarm.

Marcus rushed inside and quickly cut the thick zip ties binding Colonel Mitchell’s bruised and bleeding wrists.

The Colonel grimaced in pain but managed a tight, respectful nod, grabbing a discarded rifle from the floor.

As they moved toward the rear exit of the facility, the heavy metal bay doors suddenly shrieked open.

Charles, Rowan, and Jaxson Sterling walked into the warehouse, flanked by Sheriff Landry and a dozen corrupt deputies.

Charles loudly announced that he had made a new deal with Alejandro to hand Marcus over in exchange for keeping his laundering operation intact.

The cartel mercenaries quickly flooded into the warehouse behind the Sterlings, completely surrounding Marcus and the Colonel.

Alejandro stepped forward, demanding the encrypted drives before he ordered his men to execute everyone in the room.

Marcus reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a small, metallic detonator equipped with a blinking red light.

He coldly informed Alejandro that the stolen drives were wired to a thermite charge located in a secure locker miles away.

If Marcus did not enter a biometric passcode every ten minutes, the drives would melt into useless slag, taking the cartel’s money trails with them.

Alejandro's confident smirk vanished instantly, realizing he was entirely at the mercy of the hardened soldier.

Suddenly, a hysterical scream pierced the tense silence of the standoff, drawing every eye to the upper catwalk.

Miranda was standing violently on the narrow metal grating, holding a terrified Brooke at gunpoint.

Miranda screamed that she did not care about the cartel or the money, demanding that Marcus surrender immediately or she would kill her own niece.

Rowan panicked at the sight of his daughter being held hostage by his unstable sister, raising his shotgun toward the catwalk.

Before anyone could de-escalate the explosive situation, a nervous deputy accidentally discharged his weapon into the ceiling.

The single gunshot echoed like a cannon, and the entire warehouse immediately erupted into a chaotic, terrifying bloodbath.
