Chapter 6 - The Standoff in the Ward

Marcus immediately stepped in front of the wheelchair, placing his own body between the loaded weapons and his injured daughter.

Miranda looked at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom, demanding that he step away from the child.

She claimed that as Lily's legal guardian, she was transferring her to a facility equipped to handle "severe childhood delusions."

Sheriff Landry cocked the hammer of his heavy service pistol, arrogantly ordering Marcus to get down on his knees.

Marcus kept his hands visible but slowly shifted his weight, calculating the exact trajectory of every single weapon in the tight corridor.

He knew that firing his own weapon would spark a chaotic shootout that could easily catch Lily in the crossfire.

Instead, Marcus activated a high-frequency acoustic emitter hidden inside his tactical vest.

A sudden, deafening, high-pitched screech flooded the narrow hallway, specifically designed to overwhelm the human equilibrium.

Miranda and the deputies instinctively dropped their weapons to cover their bleeding ears in absolute agony.

Marcus moved with terrifying speed, sweeping Sheriff Landry's legs out from under him and driving a knee into a deputy's chest.

He disarmed the remaining two men in a matter of seconds, tossing their handguns down the empty elevator shaft.

Without hesitating, Marcus grabbed the handles of Lily's wheelchair and sprinted down the adjacent emergency stairwell.

He carried the wheelchair down five flights of stairs, his muscles burning with intense, agonizing exertion.

They burst out of the hospital's loading dock and into the back of an armored SUV driven by one of Marcus's loyal squadmates.

The vehicle peeled out of the parking lot, speeding out of the corrupt county and toward a secure, off-the-grid safehouse.

Marcus finally allowed himself to breathe, holding Lily's small, uninjured hand as she drifted into an exhausted sleep.

His encrypted phone buzzed, and Hayes’s frantic voice filled the dark cabin of the speeding SUV.

Hayes revealed that he had finally decrypted the deepest layers of the Sterling financial records stolen from the manor.

The Sterlings were not just a wealthy, corrupt logging family exploiting a small mountain town.

They were secretly laundering hundreds of millions of dollars for the most violent drug cartel operating in North America.

Hayes nervously added that the cartel bosses had just realized their financial ledgers were stolen, and they were officially hunting the thieves.

Marcus looked out the window as the secure phone beeped again with an incoming video call.

The caller ID displayed Miranda's name, but when Marcus answered, a heavily tattooed man stared back through the screen.
