Chapter 9 - The Cartel's Vault

Nathan stared at the massive wooden crates stacked almost to the ceiling of the abandoned mine.

The wooden crates were clearly stamped with foreign military insignia and completely filled with heavy assault rifles and explosives.

This was not just a simple insurance fraud scheme executed by a greedy, abusive husband.

Marcus and his corrupt police brother were actively storing illegal weapons for a massive criminal cartel right under the mountain.

Sarah must have accidentally discovered this terrifying secret, making her an incredible liability they had to permanently silence.

Nathan tightened his grip heavily on his shotgun and stepped deeper into the dark, damp cavern.

"Lily?" he called out softly, his voice echoing eerily off the cold stone walls.

He heard a very faint, muffled scuffling sound coming directly from behind a stack of ammunition crates near the back of the cave.

He walked slowly toward the noise, sweeping his bright flashlight beam cautiously around the corners.

He rounded the final stack of heavy wooden crates and finally saw her.

Lily was huddled entirely into a tiny ball, shivering violently against the freezing, wet stone wall.

"Lily, it is me, Uncle Nathan," he whispered gently, dropping immediately to his knees beside her.

She looked up at him with wide, terrified green eyes, tears completely frozen to her pale cheeks.

"He found the papers, Uncle Nathan," she sobbed, clutching her tiny arms tightly around her chest.

"I know, sweetheart, but the bad men are tied up now. You are completely safe," Nathan reassured her softly.

He took off his heavy winter parka and wrapped it securely around her freezing, shivering body.

He picked her up gently in his strong arms, preparing to carry her safely out of the dangerous cavern.

Just as he turned toward the tunnel exit, the sound of a heavy, metallic click echoed loudly through the dark mine.

Nathan froze entirely in his tracks, instantly recognizing the terrifying sound of a weapon being chambered.

From the dark shadows near the entrance of the cave, a tall figure stepped slowly into the beam of his flashlight.

It was a man wearing a crisp, expensive tailored suit that looked entirely out of place in the freezing wilderness.

He was holding an automatic weapon completely casually, aiming it directly at Nathan's chest.

"You really should have just stayed inside your expensive fortress, Dr. Pierce," the man said in a smooth, chillingly calm voice.

Nathan recognized the man instantly from the local news and prestigious charity galas he attended in the city.

It was Mayor Thomas Sterling, the most powerful and beloved politician in the entire county.

"You are the head of the cartel," Nathan stated coldly, the final horrifying piece of the puzzle locking perfectly into place.

"I am simply a businessman protecting his incredibly lucrative investments," the Mayor replied with a dark, wicked smile.

The Mayor raised his weapon, preparing to effortlessly silence the only two living witnesses to his massive criminal empire.

"Put the girl down, Doctor, and I promise your death will be relatively quick," the Mayor ordered calmly.

Nathan tightened his grip securely around his niece, completely refusing to surrender to this monster.

Before the Mayor could pull the trigger, a massive, deafening roar completely shattered the silence of the cavern.

A massive, furious black bear, entirely awoken from hibernation by the gunfire, charged aggressively out of the darkness directly behind the Mayor.
