Chapter 8 - The Hunt in the Snow

Nathan stared in pure horror at the open basement window.

Lily had not stayed locked securely in the safe room like she was instructed.

She had squeezed her tiny body through the narrow gap and escaped entirely out into the deadly winter storm.

She probably thought she was leading her terrifying father away from her vulnerable baby brothers.

Nathan locked the heavy steel door securely behind him to protect the sleeping infants.

He sprinted back down the hallway, grabbing a heavy winter parka from the coat rack near the kitchen.

Marcus was still lying completely unconscious on the hardwood floor, bleeding sluggishly from the deep cut on his head.

When Nathan reached the ruined living room, Old Man Miller was standing triumphantly over Detective Kane.

Miller had entirely disarmed the corrupt officer and tied his wrists securely with heavy industrial zip-ties.

"The dirty cop is fully secured, Doc," Miller grunted proudly, holding his hunting rifle steady.

"My niece escaped through the basement window, Miller. She is out there alone in the blizzard," Nathan said frantically, zipping up his parka.

Miller’s rugged face instantly hardened into an expression of grim determination.

"I will guard the house and the babies, Doc. You go find that brave little girl before the cold takes her," Miller promised fiercely.

Nathan grabbed a high-powered tactical flashlight and plunged recklessly out into the raging storm.

The wind was howling so violently it sounded like a physical scream against the mountain.

The fresh snow was falling so rapidly it was already beginning to erase Lily's tiny footprints.

Nathan desperately followed the shallow, fading tracks leading directly into the dense, dark pine forest.

"Lily!" Nathan roared into the wind, his voice completely swallowed by the sheer power of the blizzard.

He pushed blindly through the heavy branches, the sharp pine needles scratching painfully against his face.

He had walked this exact mountain trail a hundred times during the summer, but the deep snow transformed it into an entirely alien landscape.

He followed the faint tracks for almost half a mile until they abruptly ended at the edge of a steep, dangerous ravine.

Nathan shined his powerful flashlight down into the deep, dark chasm.

The beam cut through the swirling snow, revealing a small, colorful object snagged heavily on a jagged branch twenty feet below.

It was the bright pink mitten Lily had been wearing when she arrived at his gate.

"Lily!" Nathan screamed, absolute terror gripping his heart entirely.

He did not hesitate for a single second to calculate the immense risk of climbing down the icy cliff in the dark.

He scrambled aggressively down the steep embankment, sliding precariously on the loose, freezing shale.

He reached the jagged branch and grabbed the frozen pink mitten, praying silently he would not find her broken body at the bottom.

He swept his flashlight beam frantically across the snowy floor of the ravine.

She was not there.

Instead, he noticed a massive, dark opening carved deeply into the side of the rocky cliff face.

It was the entrance to an old, abandoned silver mine that had been completely sealed off decades ago.

The heavy wooden boards covering the entrance had been forcefully ripped away recently.

Nathan stepped carefully into the dark, echoing tunnel, shining his light into the deep abyss.

The light illuminated a massive, terrifying stockpile of highly illegal, military-grade weapons completely hidden inside the mountain.
