Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The massive black bear roared fiercely, its terrifying sound echoing wildly off the stone walls of the cavern.

Mayor Sterling spun around in complete panic, firing his automatic weapon blindly into the darkness.

The heavy bullets struck the angry beast, but they only served to enrage the massive animal even further.

The bear lunged violently forward, swiping its massive, clawed paw aggressively across the Mayor's chest.

The corrupt politician screamed in absolute agony and was thrown heavily against the rocky wall, dropping his weapon instantly.

Nathan did not waste a single second watching the violent chaos unfold behind him.

He clutched Lily tightly to his chest and sprinted desperately toward the narrow exit of the mine.

He burst out into the freezing, howling blizzard, scrambling aggressively up the steep, slippery embankment of the ravine.

His lungs burned fiercely from the cold air, but he did not stop running until he finally saw the golden lights of his fortified mansion in the distance.

He burst through the shattered front door of his home, collapsing heavily onto the hardwood floor in pure exhaustion.

Old Man Miller was still standing firmly over the bound and terrified Detective Kane.

Marcus remained completely unconscious in the back hallway, exactly where Nathan had left him.

"You found her, Doc!" Miller cheered loudly, lowering his heavy hunting rifle with a massive sigh of relief.

Nathan nodded weakly, unwrapping the heavy parka to reveal a shivering but completely safe little girl.

He immediately called the FBI using his secure, encrypted hospital communication line, completely bypassing the corrupt local police dispatch.

Within two hours, a massive convoy of heavily armed federal agents stormed the mountain estate.

They arrested Marcus and his corrupt brother without a single shot being fired.

Federal agents also discovered the Mayor's severely mangled body in the cave, exposing the entire massive cartel operation to the world.

Nathan sat quietly in the back of a warm federal ambulance, watching the chaotic scene finally wind down.

Lily was sleeping peacefully on a stretcher beside him, completely safe from the monsters who had hunted her.

The two infants had been safely recovered from the basement and were currently being warmed in the hospital transport unit.

A senior FBI agent walked over to Nathan and handed him a steaming cup of hot black coffee.

"You did an incredible job tonight, Dr. Pierce. You saved those kids and single-handedly brought down a massive criminal empire," the agent praised him warmly.

Nathan took a slow sip of the hot coffee, feeling the profound weight of the long, terrifying night finally lifting from his weary shoulders.

He had successfully protected his family, honored his murdered sister's final wish, and defeated the absolute worst monsters in the city.

The nightmare was finally completely over.

Nathan reached into the pocket of his bloody medical scrubs and pulled out the plastic-wrapped envelope Sarah had sewn into the coat.

He had been entirely too busy fighting for survival to actually examine the highly classified documents inside.

He opened the heavy envelope and slowly pulled out the first page of the life insurance policy Marcus had taken out on the children.

He scanned down to the signature line at the very bottom of the document to see exactly who had officially authorized the massive payouts.

The blood completely froze in Nathan's veins as he stared at the familiar, elegant handwriting on the official authorization line.

The signature authorizing the fraudulent, multi-million dollar life insurance policy did not belong to Marcus Kane or the dead Mayor.

The signature belonged entirely, undeniably, to Nathan's loyal housekeeper, Rosa.
