Chapter 6 - The Corrupt Badge

The flashing blue and red lights cut through the tear gas, painting the living room in a chaotic, rotating glow.
Nathan stared in complete horror as a marked police cruiser slid to a halt behind Marcus's ruined SUV.
A tall, heavily armed police officer stepped out of the cruiser, his silhouette dark against the raging snowstorm.
The officer did not call for backup over his radio, nor did he approach the house with any standard tactical caution.
He simply walked up to the splintered front door and kicked it completely open.
"Is the house secure, Marcus?" the officer asked casually, stepping into the ruined foyer.
"The doctor just surrendered his weapon, Detective Kane," Marcus replied, keeping his knife firmly pressed against Rosa's throat.
Nathan realized with a sickening clarity how Marcus had managed to cover up Sarah's murder so quickly.
Marcus’s brother was a high-ranking local police detective who had complete control over the county emergency dispatch.
The entire system was corrupted from the inside out to protect this monster.
Detective Kane walked slowly into the living room, shining his heavy police flashlight directly into Nathan's eyes.
"Dr. Pierce," the detective sneered, examining the expensive art on the walls. "You have a very lovely home."
"You are going to help him murder his own children for insurance money?" Nathan asked, his voice filled with absolute disgust.
Detective Kane sighed heavily and pulled his service weapon from its holster.
"I am not helping him murder anyone, Doctor," the corrupt officer replied smoothly.
"I am simply responding to a frantic 911 call from a distressed father whose estranged wife kidnapped their children."
The detective pointed his gun directly at Nathan's chest.
"Tragically, when I arrived, I found the deranged wife dead from exposure, and her unhinged brother trying to hold the children hostage."
It was a perfectly crafted, entirely fabricated narrative that the corrupt police department would absolutely endorse.
Marcus laughed loudly and finally shoved Rosa roughly to the floor, releasing his hostage.
"Go find my boys in the basement, Rosa, and maybe I will let you live," Marcus ordered her.
Rosa scrambled away, crying hysterically, but she did not run toward the basement door.
She ran completely out of the shattered front door, fleeing into the deadly winter storm to save herself.
Marcus did not care; his primary focus was entirely on securing his massive payday.
"Kill the doctor and find the kids," Marcus ordered his brother coldly.
Detective Kane raised his weapon and aimed precisely at the center of Nathan's forehead.
Nathan squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the fatal gunshot that would end his life.
But instead of a deafening gunshot, a loud, mechanical grinding noise suddenly echoed from the heavy iron gates at the bottom of the driveway.

The massive, bright headlights of a terrifyingly large snowplow entirely illuminated the dark living room.
Before the corrupt detective could even pull the trigger, the massive yellow plow slammed violently into the side of the parked police cruiser.
