Chapter 5 - The Desperation

The Boston police arrived less than ten minutes later.
They escorted a screaming and crying Chloe out of the building in shiny silver handcuffs.
Marcus stood completely frozen in the boardroom, watching his entire life crumble into dust.
Julian looked at Marcus with absolute disgust.
“The acquisition deal is permanently canceled.”
“My legal team is currently forwarding all of your fraudulent financial records to the FBI.”
“You are entirely ruined, Marcus.”
Marcus stumbled out of the Rhodes Capital building with his lawyers screaming at him in the rain.
I spent the rest of the day finalizing the paperwork to officially liquidate his company's remaining assets.
By Friday afternoon, the news of Marcus's massive bankruptcy was on the front page of every financial newspaper.
Julian insisted on hiring elite private security to guard me and Emma around the clock.
He knew a desperate man with nothing left to lose was the most dangerous kind of enemy.
I tried to maintain a normal routine to keep Emma from getting scared.
I drove to her expensive private preschool at three o'clock to pick her up.
The sky was unnaturally dark, threatening another massive thunderstorm.
I walked into the colorful classroom, but Emma was nowhere to be seen.
Her teacher, Mrs. Higgins, looked up from her desk with a confused expression.
“Evelyn, what are you doing here?”
My stomach completely dropped.
“I am here to pick up my daughter.”
Mrs. Higgins frowned and adjusted her glasses.
“But Emma’s uncle already picked her up fifteen minutes ago.”
The blood roared so loudly in my ears I could barely hear myself think.
“I do not have a brother,” I whispered in horror.
Mrs. Higgins turned completely white and grabbed the classroom telephone.
My cell phone suddenly vibrated in my purse.
I pulled it out with shaking hands and saw an unknown caller ID.
I answered the phone, and Marcus’s chilling voice echoed through the speaker.
May you like
“You took my entire future away from me, Evelyn.”
“So I decided to take yours.”
