Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap
Monday morning arrived with a torrential downpour that matched the dark mood in the Rhodes Capital boardroom.
I sat at the head of the massive glass table, flanked by our top corporate lawyers.
Marcus strode into the room at exactly nine o'clock with his legal team trailing behind him.
He looked incredibly confident, clearly believing his vicious threat from the wedding had secured his victory.
He sat down across from me and offered a sickeningly sweet smile.
“Good morning, Evelyn.”
“I trust we can make this a quick and painless transition today.”
I did not smile back.
I slid a thick, heavy black folder across the glass table toward him.
“This is our final compliance report regarding Mercer Innovations.”
Marcus opened the folder, fully expecting to see a finalized buyout contract.
Instead, his eyes widened in sheer panic as he flipped through the pages.
The folder contained detailed copies of his hidden debts, illegal tax evasions, and fraudulent revenue projections.
It was all the data I had secretly downloaded onto my encrypted drive five years ago.
“What the hell is this?” Marcus demanded, his voice cracking.
“It is a complete audit of your fraudulent empire,” I replied coldly.
His lead attorney frantically scanned the documents and turned pale.
“Evelyn, you can’t use this against me!” Marcus shouted.
“You were my wife when this happened, which means you are just as guilty as I am!”
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the cold glass table.
“Actually, Marcus, I filed an anonymous whistleblower report with the SEC the exact same week you filed for divorce.”
“I was granted full federal immunity five years ago.”
Marcus stood up so fast his heavy leather chair crashed to the floor.
“You planned this from the very beginning!”
Before I could answer, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom violently swung open.
Chloe burst into the room, drenched in rain and holding a yellow manila envelope.
