Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Queen

Serena stared at the broken gun in her hand, her mind completely unable to process her defeat.

She threw the useless weapon to the ground, screaming in sheer frustration.

Federal agents swarmed the altar, tackling her to the marble floor and securing her wrists in heavy iron cuffs.

She thrashed violently, her beautiful mourning veil tearing as it caught under an agent's boot.

"This isn't over, Lorenzo!" she shrieked like a banshee.

"I will destroy you from the inside! I will burn your name to the ground!"

Lorenzo stood over her, his face as cold and unreadable as carved stone.

"You will spend the rest of your life in a concrete box, Serena," he said quietly.

"And every time you close your eyes, you will remember that you were beaten by a three-year-old child."

The agents hauled her away, her curses fading into the sirens outside.

The cathedral was chaotic as the FBI began processing the surrendered mobsters.

Lorenzo ignored them all, kneeling down to scoop Leo into his arms.

The boy buried his face into Lorenzo’s neck, trembling from the adrenaline and fear.

"You did perfectly, little man," Lorenzo whispered, holding the child tightly.

He carried Leo out of the church through a side door, avoiding the flashing cameras of the press.

A sleek black car was waiting in the alleyway.

Lorenzo opened the door, and Maria practically threw herself out of the vehicle.

She wrapped her arms around her son and Lorenzo simultaneously, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Thank you," she cried, kissing Lorenzo's cheek.

"Thank you for saving him."

"He saved me first," Lorenzo replied, a genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in months.

The nightmare was finally over.

Serena’s faction had been dismantled, the corrupt captains were in federal custody, and the poison was out of his home.

He had lost his empire, but as he looked at Maria and Leo, he realized he didn't care.

He had more than enough hidden wealth to start a new, quiet life far away from the blood and the betrayal.

They drove to a private airfield where a jet was already fueled and waiting on the tarmac.

They were heading to a villa in Tuscany, a place surrounded by vineyards and sunshine.

As the plane took off, Lorenzo felt a profound sense of peace wash over him.

He looked out the window, watching the dark skyline of New York disappear into the clouds.

He poured himself a glass of sparkling water, finally free from the paranoia of looking for poison.

He took a long, refreshing drink, closing his eyes to rest.

Suddenly, a strange, metallic ringing echoed in his right ear.

He opened his eyes, feeling a sudden, agonizing pressure building behind his skull.
