Chapter 3 - The Shadow War

Lorenzo threw the burning jacket to the floor, stamping out the smoking fabric with his leather shoe.
Maria gasped, covering Leo's eyes as the smell of melting wool filled the narrow pantry.
Serena was no longer waiting for him to slowly go deaf and weak.
She had escalated her timeline, attempting a brutal, public assassination disguised as a medical emergency.
Lorenzo realized that if he died tonight, the Romano family would inherit his entire empire through his grieving widow.
He looked at Maria, recognizing that she and her son were the only people in this massive estate he could actually trust.
"You need to hide," Lorenzo told her, his voice rough with rising anger.
"If she knows the boy warned me, she will not hesitate to silence both of you."
Maria nodded quickly, gathering her meager belongings from the staff locker room.
Lorenzo left them in a secured underground bunker beneath the wine cellar, a room only his late father had known about.
He returned to the ballroom wearing a fresh jacket, moving with the deadly calm of a predator.
He had to play the game until he could completely dismantle Serena's network from the inside.
He found her dancing with a federal judge, laughing flawlessly as if she hadn't just tried to melt his internal organs.
"You changed your coat," she noted, her eyes narrowing as he cut in to take her waist.
"A waiter spilled champagne on me," Lorenzo lied smoothly, pulling her close.
He spun her across the marble floor, testing the waters of her deception.
"You look disappointed, my love," he whispered into her ear.
"I am just eager for all these people to leave so we can be alone," she replied with a fake, sultry pout.
Lorenzo smiled, but his mind was already calculating the death toll of the coming days.
He needed to know who inside his inner circle had allowed Serena to smuggle acid into his highly secure home.
Later that night, after the last guest had left, Lorenzo went to his private security room.
He pulled up the surveillance footage from the grand dining room where the wine had been poured.
He expected to see one of the kitchen staff helping Serena.
Instead, the screen showed his most trusted bodyguard, Marco, handing Serena the deadly vial.
Marco had been with Lorenzo for fifteen years, a man who had taken a bullet for him in Miami.
Before Lorenzo could even process the heartbreak of this betrayal, the security feed suddenly went black.

A cold, metallic click echoed loudly from the doorway right behind him.
"You should have just drank the wine, boss," Marco’s voice sneered in the darkness.
