Chapter 1 - The Silent Witness

The ballroom buzzed with the sound of dangerous men pretending to be civilized.
Lorenzo held the crystal glass against his chest, the dark red wine catching the light of a hundred chandeliers.
Serena’s smile was flawless, a weapon she wielded with absolute perfection.
She looked at him with eyes that promised a lifetime of devotion.
He tilted the glass toward his mouth, the scent of crushed grapes hiding something sharp and metallic underneath.
Through the distortion of the curved crystal, he saw a small shadow move near the heavy velvet drapes.
It was a child.
The boy was no older than three, wearing a simple linen shirt that marked him as the son of the estate's staff.
It was Leo, the silent toddler of Maria, the head maid who had served the Duca family for years.
Leo had never spoken a single word in his life, but his dark eyes held a profound, unnerving intelligence.
As Lorenzo brought the glass a millimeter closer to his lips, the child stepped out from the shadows.
Leo raised his small, pale hands in the air.
He wrapped his tiny fingers around his own throat.
He let out a silent gasp, widening his eyes in a perfect mimicry of a man suffocating to death.
Then, the boy pointed a single, steady finger directly at the wine glass, and finally, at Serena.
Lorenzo’s blood turned to ice in his veins.
Instinct, sharper than any blade, took over his rigid body.
He pretended to stumble, shifting his weight awkwardly and knocking his arm against the passing tray of a terrified waiter.
The wine glass slipped from his fingers and shattered violently against the marble floor.
A dark red puddle spread over the pristine white stone, looking entirely too much like fresh blood.
Serena let out a soft gasp of surprise, her carefully constructed mask slipping for a fraction of a second.
In that fleeting moment, Lorenzo did not see a worried fiancée.
He saw pure, unadulterated rage flashing in her dark eyes.
The sweet, loving smile returned to her face before anyone else could notice the shift.
"Oh, my clumsy love," she murmured, pulling out a delicate silk handkerchief to dab at his cuff.
"I will fetch you another glass immediately," she insisted, her voice tight with an urgency she tried to hide.
Lorenzo glanced back toward the velvet drapes, but the silent child was already gone.
He knew with absolute certainty that the boy had just saved his life.
But as Serena signaled a waiter and gracefully handed him a fresh, identical glass of wine, Lorenzo realized the true nightmare had just begun.
"Drink up," Serena whispered, her voice laced with venom.

Lorenzo looked across the room and saw her father, Don Romano, watching them with a cold, expectant glare.
If Lorenzo refused the glass now, the alliance would break, and a bloody mafia war would start tonight right in his own home.
