Chapter 9 - The Extraction

The intense downdraft from the helicopter blades kicked up massive clouds of dust outside the cabin windows.

A heavily armed extraction team wearing Roman’s syndicate insignia repelled down from the chopper, swarming the surrounding woods.

Roman’s loyal head of security, the giant man from the restaurant alley, kicked open the remaining piece of the door.

He immediately rushed to his bleeding boss, helping Roman carefully to his feet.

"Secure the perimeter and load the traitor into the chopper," Roman ordered firmly, pointing at Derek's unconscious body on the floor.

The guards dragged Derek out of the cabin, binding his hands tightly behind his back with heavy zip-ties.

Harper stood frozen in the center of the room, overwhelmed by the sudden, massive show of military force.

Roman stopped at the doorway and turned back to look at her, his expression softening just a fraction of an inch.

"Are you coming, Mrs. Falco?" Roman asked quietly, offering his uninjured hand to her.

Harper stared at his outstretched hand, knowing exactly what accepting it meant.

If she went with him, she was officially embracing her forced marriage and stepping completely into his dark, violent world.

But if she stayed, she was still a wanted fugitive framed for a brutal murder by the man she had just violently assaulted.

She took a deep breath, walked across the dusty floor, and firmly placed her hand in his.

They boarded the massive private helicopter, leaving the abandoned cabin far behind as they soared over the dark forest.

Roman leaned back against the plush leather seat, clearly exhausted from the severe blood loss.

He pulled a sleek satellite phone from his pocket and dialed a secure number.

"Initiate the cleanup protocol," Roman commanded smoothly into the receiver.

"Wipe Harper’s entire digital footprint, clear the murder charges, and transfer all of Derek’s stolen funds back into the syndicate accounts."

Harper watched him issue the terrifying orders, realizing he had the power to literally erase her entire past existence.

When he hung up the phone, he turned to face her, his dark eyes completely unreadable.

"You are officially a ghost, Harper," Roman stated plainly over the roar of the engines.

"The woman who cowered in that restaurant no longer exists."

Harper nodded slowly, feeling a strange, profound sense of liberation wash over her tired body.

She was no longer the weak, manipulated girlfriend; she was the wife of the most powerful man in the city.

The helicopter landed smoothly on the private helipad of Roman’s massive, heavily fortified coastal estate.

Guards immediately rushed out to meet them, securing the perimeter and escorting them inside the luxurious mansion.

Roman was taken directly to the underground medical wing for emergency surgery to repair his shoulder.

Harper was escorted to the opulent master suite by a silent, respectful maid who offered her fresh clothes and a hot shower.

She stood under the steaming water, finally washing away the blood, soot, and terror of the longest night of her life.

She stepped out of the bathroom, wrapped in a plush silk robe, believing the nightmare was finally over.

She walked over to the massive mahogany desk in the corner of the bedroom to check the time on the gold clock.

Sitting perfectly centered on the desk blotter was a thick manila folder with her name printed on the tab.
