Chapter 4 - The Syndicate Hacker

The revelation hit Harper like a physical blow to the chest.

Roman Falco was not a wealthy businessman playing the hero; he was the head of a terrifying organized crime syndicate.

She had just traded a violent, manipulative boyfriend for the most dangerous mafia boss in the city.

Harper stared at him, her mind frantically calculating her limited options for survival.

"If I refuse to help you, are you going to kill me?" she asked, her voice surprisingly steady despite the fear.

Roman offered a small, humorless smile that did not reach his cold eyes.

"If I wanted you dead, I would have left you in that burning office," Roman replied smoothly.

"I need your accounting expertise to trace the money Derek hid in the offshore accounts."

He stood up and gestured for her to follow him down a short, brightly lit hallway.

He opened a heavy steel door, revealing a massive, high-tech server room filled with glowing computer monitors.

Sitting at the center desk was a young woman with bright pink hair, rapidly typing on three different keyboards.

"This is Chloe, my chief cybersecurity analyst," Roman introduced her.

Chloe briefly glanced over her shoulder and offered Harper a sympathetic grimace.

"You look like hell, honey," Chloe noted before turning back to her screens.

Roman leaned over the desk, his presence demanding absolute attention.

"Did you find the backdoor in the accounting firm's servers?" Roman asked.

Chloe nodded, pulling up a complex web of financial transactions on the main monitor.

"Derek was sloppy. He routed the stolen funds through a series of shell companies in the Cayman Islands," Chloe explained.

"But he hit a massive roadblock when he tried to cash out the final account."

Harper stepped closer to the screen, her trained accountant eyes quickly scanning the numbers.

"The final account requires a dual-authorization biometric scan to release the funds," Harper realized aloud.

Roman looked at her, his expression darkening with sudden, terrifying understanding.

"Derek cannot access the money without the fingerprint of the primary account holder," Roman stated grimly.

Harper swallowed hard, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs.

"I am the primary account holder," she whispered, the horrifying truth sinking in.

Derek had not framed her for murder just to ruin her life; he framed her to force her into hiding.

He knew she would be desperately vulnerable and easy to kidnap once she was a wanted fugitive.

Suddenly, the underground bunker's security alarms began blaring a deafening, high-pitched warning.

Red strobe lights flashed violently across the server room walls, plunging them into chaos.

"Someone just breached the outer perimeter gate," Chloe yelled over the noise, frantically typing on her keyboard.

Roman drew his pistol in a smooth, practiced motion, his face turning into a mask of pure, lethal focus.

He grabbed Harper's arm and pushed her toward the reinforced panic room at the back of the bunker.

Before they could reach the steel door, a massive explosion rocked the concrete ceiling above them.
