Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Concrete dust rained down from the ceiling as the shockwave threw Harper to the floor.
Roman immediately covered her body with his own, shielding her from the falling debris.
The heavy steel doors of the server room groaned under the immense pressure before violently blowing off their hinges.
Thick, grey smoke flooded the room, choking the air from Harper’s lungs.
"Chloe, initiate the total lockdown protocol!" Roman yelled over the chaotic alarms, pulling Harper to her feet.
Chloe smashed a massive red button on her desk just as a squad of heavily armed mercenaries stormed through the smoke.
The mercenaries wore unmarked tactical gear and night-vision goggles, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room.
Roman pushed Harper behind a massive server rack and opened fire with lethal precision.
He dropped two of the attackers instantly, his shots echoing deafeningly in the enclosed space.
The remaining mercenaries returned fire, shredding the expensive computer equipment and sending sparks flying into the air.
Harper covered her ears, her entire body shaking with pure, unadulterated terror.
Roman reloaded his weapon flawlessly, his face completely devoid of panic.
"We have to reach the secondary exit tunnel," Roman commanded, grabbing Harper's hand.
He laid down a heavy suppressive fire, forcing the attackers to take cover behind the ruined desks.
They sprinted down the smoky hallway, dodging bullets that chipped the concrete walls around them.
They finally reached a heavy iron door hidden at the very end of the corridor.
Roman punched a frantic code into the keypad, and the door hissed open, revealing a dark, narrow escape tunnel.
He shoved Harper inside and turned back to lay down one final burst of gunfire to cover their retreat.
Just as Roman stepped into the tunnel, a sniper bullet tore through his shoulder, spinning him violently around.
He collapsed onto the cold concrete floor, his gun clattering out of his grasp.
"Roman!" Harper screamed, dropping to her knees beside his bleeding body.
He gritted his teeth in agony, blood rapidly soaking through his expensive charcoal suit jacket.
The mercenaries were advancing down the hallway, their heavy boots echoing ominously closer.
Harper knew they were completely trapped.

She did not hesitate or think about the danger.
She snatched Roman’s fallen pistol from the floor, turned toward the open doorway, and aimed the weapon directly at the approaching attackers.
