Chapter 6 - A Desperate Escape

Sarah stared at the glowing red microchip embedded in the back of the ruby pendant.
David had intentionally let Thomas steal the necklace during the chaotic struggle.
It was a brilliantly cruel trap designed to track their every single movement.
She quickly rolled down the police cruiser's window and tossed the necklace into the rushing river below the bridge.
The state trooper dropped them off near the towering glass buildings of the downtown financial district.
It was four in the morning, and the streets were completely deserted and cloaked in thick fog.
Sarah held the children's hands as they walked briskly toward the massive central bank.
She knew the bank did not open for another five hours, which was far too late.
They walked around to the side alley, finding the heavy metal door used for employee trash disposal.
Sarah used a heavy brick to smash the electronic keypad, hoping to trigger a localized error instead of a full alarm.
The lock sparked violently and clicked open, allowing them to slip into the dark utility corridor.
They navigated the silent, echoing halls using only the dim glow of the emergency exit signs.
They finally reached the subterranean vault level, standing before a massive wall of safety deposit boxes.
Sarah quickly located box number four hundred and twelve, matching the engraving on the doctor's silver key.
She inserted the key and turned it, praying that David had not emptied it yet.
The small metal door popped open, revealing a thick manila envelope and a digital hard drive.
Sarah tore the envelope open, scanning the official medical documents under the dim light.
It contained full DNA profiles, signed confessions from the medical staff, and offshore banking receipts.
It was more than enough evidence to put David and Victoria in federal prison for the rest of their lives.
She shoved the documents into her jacket, feeling a sudden surge of triumphant hope.
Suddenly, the lights in the entire vault level flickered and blazed to life.
The heavy steel vault door began to close automatically, sliding on its massive tracks with a loud grinding noise.
Sarah grabbed the kids and sprinted toward the exit, sliding through the gap just before the steel slammed shut.
They were trapped in the main lobby, completely surrounded by private security guards with drawn weapons.
Victoria walked out from behind the teller counter, wearing an elegant silk coat and a triumphant smile.
She clapped her hands slowly, congratulating Sarah on making it this far into the game.
Victoria revealed that she owned the private security firm contracted to protect the bank.
She ordered the guards to seize the children and kill the mother immediately.
Sarah backed against the marble wall, realizing they had absolutely nowhere left to run.

Before the guards could fire, the large glass doors of the bank suddenly shattered inward.
A heavy armored truck crashed violently through the lobby, spraying glass and debris everywhere.
